    DAY & NIGHT UNIT #5843660
Installed 1990 on the roof of new construction

Last week the heater would not come on. Called the guy that installed it 23 years ago. Upon checking the unit on the roof, he found yellow jackets or mud dobbers has full the pilot orvis. He secured a new part and cam back the next day to find they had been back and clogged the gas opening. Another new part ordered and placed afew days later.

The onlysolution the teck could come up with is to place a 1/16 inch screen over the lovers thus keeping the bugs out. He stated this would have to be removed to use the heating as the screen would restrict the air flow. This is not a solution as we can not climb up on the roof every time we need the heater!!

The pest control will not spray poison because it would get into the living area.

HELP---have you had this problem with the unit before? What is the solution??

I would look at it this way: you have not had an issue in 23 years, basically it took 23 years for the bugs/insects to create a problem large enough to shut the system down, correct? Now that you have had the bugs/insects removed, and the unit properly serviced (I assume), you should be good for years to come with no modifications of the unit what so ever. You could always have a yearly service of the unit done to make sure all is clear and in order.

I have gotten bids from several companies for a gas furnace and central air. The Bryant and Day and Night dealers are the cheapest, although none of this is cheap. What opinions do you have about these companies? Should I hold out for Trane, Lennox?
