I have a Hampton Bay ceiling fan that the remote control stopped working on. The fixture still works from the wall switch. I am reluctant to delve into the Hampton Bay customer service morass to try & have the remote replaced, we have tried new batteries etc. Can I just get a new remote as if the fixture had never been wired for one in the first place & wire it up? Or will having had a remote feature on it before interfere with a new one? The fixture has both fan & lights & a reostat.

1. Does the LED on the old remote still light?
2. Does the fan have pullchains
3. What do you mean, a reostat?
4. What do you mean, the fixture has never been wired for a remote?

3. there is a button on the remote that functions as a reostat/ "dimmer" button
4. Can I just by a universal remote & wire the thing like it has never had a remote on it or is there going to be something else I have to take out first since there is one there... or is this all proprietary stuff since it is the oh so easy to work with company...

What do you mean it still functions from the wall switch?

I can turn on the light & fan from the wall switch fine. The remote unit just does squat. Double switch, one for the light, one for the fan. Come to think of it there may have been pull chains that have broken, I seem to remember changing the speed of the fan when the remote first went out with the chain, off/on at the switch, speed at the chain, but I'm not entirely sure about it & I don't see any chains now or any remnants or entries for them. I could be remembering a different fan from another house, (repeated head trauma from too many DIY projects falling on my head... :) )

Ok, the light switch controls the light, and the wall switch controls the fan? And they're standard wall toggle switches? Sounds like the remote wasn't wired in the first place.
