Will a too long thermocouple cause the pilot to go out also?

Hi Sl4gathor

If you have purchased a thermocouple that is longer than the old one it should NOT be an issue that would keep the pilot from staying lit.

If you are still having problems after replacing the thermocouple I would suggest that you may have an issue with air make-up if you have a CLOSED COMBUSTION CHAMBER. In this case, this means that the filters may be blocked/clogged and need to be cleaned out. If you pop back and can tell us the model number and brand name as well as how old the unit is we can probably be more help, OK?

Next time run to the basement I will get the name, I put it in last night, I didn't have it pushed in all the way, did that this morning when I re-lit the pilot.
It isn't a sealed chamber, and the pilot is nice and blue, but it is hitting more of the probe now. Hopefully it will stay lit.

I want to say the name starts with a P but not 100% sure, have to go to work, after work I can get all the info...

It's a Rheem 44v40-1
When I light the pilot, the burner functions normally, heats the water up good, but, when it's need'd again the pilot is out, not sure of the year, I bought the house in 2000 so it's at least 13 years old.

Try contacting Rheem company technical services by submitting this form:

Give them the information they ask for and ask to speck with a tech. service person. When they call back you will need to have a basic electrical tester available to work through each diagnostic step with them.
