Safest way under six weeks is to bath in dawn dish washing soap and warm water, same as washing a baby. Do not immerse head, rinse, dry and use a flea comb to get out any left over fleas. Treat like little babies and keep warm. Test the water before bathing as you would for a baby.

They will get more fleas from mom but will not be infested so far that the fleas get the upper hand and make them enemic. I wouldn't advise bathing mom while nursing, but a good combing now and then, being careful of her nipples.

Please do not constantly bathe them. This may cause chills and lead to respiratory problems.

How did you try to control them?
Follow what tickle said re: the kittens. Treat the mother with Revolution (and ONLY that), to take care of her fleas. The kittens can be treated with Revolution as well once they are 6 weeks old.

There's a product called diatomaceous earth that kills adult fleas. It's completely safe to use on or around animals, and contains no pesticides or harmful chemicals. You can find it online or some feed stores. Just make sure you get food grade. They also sell pool grade, but it's been heat treated and that makes it harmful to animals.

To use it, just put a light dusting on the carpet and any furniture that's infested. For the cats, a thin line down their spines and then rubbed into their fur should do the trick. It works by basically cutting into a bug's exoskeleton so they dehydrate and die. Since it only kills live fleas, it'll need to be reapplied once or twice a week, until all the eggs have hatched and the adults are dead.
