If the gas has been sitting in it for any length of time, dump it and replace it with new gas. If you're lucky, that will be all you need to do. If it was in there long enough, you will need to do what Smoothy said.

If it has fresh gas in it, is it Premium? My small engine repair man said that for the last 15 years or so, that regular gas has really lost quality... runs good in cars, but will gum up small engine carburators. He said use Premium. I have been doing that now for 3 yrs in my 2 riding mowers, 2 weedeaters, and chain saw, and tiller... no more carburator problems!
If your carburator isn't clogged up, did you check the air filter? If it's dirty, it's hard to run. Did you check the spark plug? Is it adjusted to the correct gap?
If all that is OK, then it could be a small electrical part. I suggest taking it to a good small engine repair person. Good luck. and Please start using Premium if you aren't already.

Doesn't matter what it has right now... has it sat for long periods unused with fuel in it? You get varnish buildup that reduced jet size effectively leaning out the mixture to the point it won't start without ether... and sometimes at all.

I get a lot of expensive lawn equipment free when people throw them out when they don't start in the spring, after they find out what the minimum charge at repair shops are.

I've got a big shed full of stuff... and in the 16 years I've owned my house... I've bought nothing... Mowers, tractors, pressure washers, chipper shredders... etc... most of it expensive top brand stuff..

All of it fixed within 15 minutes of getting it home.

    Hi,
If it is a newer model machine, it could have a cast flywhel key built into the flywheel. These at times shear and throw the timing off. It will still have fire, just not at the correct time.
It only needs compression, crabureation and ignition to run, but all must happen at the right time and quantity for operation.
    Peace,

FL20 weedeater will only run a few seconds [ 1 Answers ]

I have a FL 20 weedeater that will only run for about 10 seconds and then dies. It will run a little longer if I leave it on full or half choke. I have replaced the Air cleaner and the in tank fuel filter. It acts like it is running out of fuel.
