    Hurt dog
My dog was hit by a car yesterday and we took him to the vet and he stayed over night. They said nothing was broken and gave him some medicine that makes him very drowsy but said the next couple of days are crucial. He has some nerve damage so his front legs aren't responding very well but he seems to be moving his head fine. He won't stand up and he won't eat or drink. What can we do to help him?

You will have to get him outside to relieve himself somehow, have you done that yet? You can assist him to stand up while he either urinates or has a good bowel movement.

Did the vet do x rays ? How did they determine nothing was broken. Is it a large breed dog and how old is he ?

I think you had better try another vet, although the pills to make him drowsy are to keep him stabilized.

Lylah, we can't diagnose on the internet. Have you been trying to get him outside; quite honestly, keeping him drowsy is the best medicine to heal him, it means he can't run or walk on those front legs that were probably damaged.

The vet have done what they could. We've put a towel under him and tried to help him walk and move but he just lays in the air motionless. Is it possible he's just given up?

Has he been soiling himself? Dogs will not do that unless they can't possibly help it. I could say yes, he probably has, but the pills may be making him more lethargic then he needs to be.

Has he eaten or drank any water since you brought him home?

This is hard to diagnose on the internet, my dear.

What were the vet's instructions for after care?

He's been urinating on himself he's been drinking as much water as we can give him but its through a medicine syringe like they use for baby medicine. He's been eating some yogurt. The vet said try to give him hamburger mixed with rice but he won't eat anything unless we put it in his mouth. If he's already has a mind set on giving up is there anyway we can convince him to keep trying?

I would stay with him and talk to him constantly, keep trying to make him eat. I don't know what to say to you about this. You may have to face the inevitable if you can't get any response from him.

The Vet said nothing is broken and sent the dog home but also said the next few days are crucial.

    How are they crucial?

Why didn't the Vet keep him?
