This is my sixth pregnancy. I have had three miscarriages that started with heavy bleeding, clots, and passing tissue, and eventually heavy cramping. Then I went on to have a healthy full term pregnancy and then a preterm pregnancy at 32 weeks due to 100% placental abruption. She is alive and well. Now my sixth pregnancy has been routine. On 12-23-12 I started spotting a brown/pinkish discharge. I called my OBGYN her nurse practitioner suggested I rest and drink pleanty of fluids. She did not think that I was miscarrying. She stated right now it could go either way and to rest. Due to the holidays their office is closed until January 3rd. I do have the first appointment on that day. She did not recommend I go to the ER. Today is the 27th the color has changed from brown to pink to bright red and now back to a dull pinkish/brown. No clots, no passing of tissue, no cramping. She never explained what could be going on. Never explained the chances of a healthy pregnancy. Nothing. In my mind I have convinced myself of a miscarriage. Is that an accurate assumption. I know you can't give definite answers. But, I do believe part of a doctors job is more than giving scientific information. Please give me some guidance. What could this be. The spotting is less every day. I am on a prenatal, progesterone pills 200mg, and ASA 81mg because of my history of a placental abruption. I feel put off, no explanations, no guidance, and told to wait 11-12 days until the office opens again. In your opinion should I go to the ER to find out, continue to wait until my appointment. What? Mentally and emotionally this is horrible.

Hi, I'm an ob nurse. I know what you are going through, the same thing happened to me at 11 w 5d. Brown discharge. I went to the ER and the baby had no heart beat. Unfortunately, the nurse cannot tell you exactly what will happen, they just don't know. I have had patients with LOTS of bright red bleeding for days, and the baby was fine. Good luck to you.
