    Ruptured anal gland care
    Hello,
My 11 year old Husky has just had an anal gland rupture. She is currently on Eltroxin for thyroid disorder.
I know I need to flush this wound to keep it clean and get to see the ver as soon as possible, but with it beig the holidays it may take a few days.
I am an RN in toronto Canada and I have 2 questions:

    1) is it safe to flush this area with a diluted betadine solution o should I just ise plain soap and water twice a day?
    2) I know this needs to heal from the inside out and may even require a few sutures; however, is it safe for me to apply a small amt of human Fuucidin ointment2% to this area? If so how often?
Any help appreciated. Thank you so much and Happy Holidays! : )

I would say just flush it with the betadine and not to put any type of ointment on the actual wound itself.

    I agree.

Definitely no to the soap and water, just ouch! Imagine how much soap would hurt on a wound. Not good.

Just use the betadine, and keep it clean as best you can.

If there's an emergency vet near you, you may need to spend that extra money to get your dog in. I know it's expensive, but emergency vets are usually open during the holidays, where your regular vet may not be.

    Good luck.

Does this require urgent care or may I care and maintain it until my pets internal medicine doctor returns Jan 2? If we can wait for her doctor I would prefer it but I don't want to put my dog at risk either.
My dogs vet works at vetrinary emergency clinic.

I would think you should get her in as soon as possible... This can't comfortable... Plus I don't think you need a specialty doctor for this...

Please let us know how it goes, and how he's feeling in the days to come. We often never hear how the dog is doing after the advice is given. :)
