Hello, I have a male standard poodle who has a terrible liquid dripping from his anus. I think it might be from his anal glands. But, I don't know. It smells sort of like rotting carrot tops and a swamp together. It comes out when he curls up in a ball. I guess that action makes it come out.Does anyone have any help for me? Thanks!

Is he neutered? If not it may be hormonal or some other kind of boy puppy issue. If he is neutered, I'm not sure what would cause that problem, maybe diet, but I would suggest seeing a vet either way if it continues.

This is common I just read this in a book. With on hand cover the anus with tissue with other hand sort of in a squeezing pinching motion, feel the glands (should be at 4 and 8) and squeeze. You should see fluid saturating the tissue.afterward put petroleum jelly on his anal area. You might want to wear gloves for this. Good luck.

It sounds like anal glands, but it is not normal for them to drip like that. I would see what the vet can do. Often the problem is not emptying at all. Sometimes the vet removes them, perhaps a good solution in this case.

I had a maltese/poodle mix and her anal glands did this as well. When we took her for check ups the vet "expressed" her anal glands (drained them, as explained in berns post) The vet said this is common in poodles. Their anal glands are know for getting "clogged". If you have a weak stomach, I would recommend letting a vet do it (it is really really gross smelling).

Yeah rpg, they do smell pretty foul. Sira, sorry I didn't see this sooner. Your dogs anal glands are full. For whatever reason, he isn't able to express them through regular bowel movements. What is happening with the dripping is normal for a dog whose glands are completely full. Please bring him to your vet, or better yet (cheaper) his groomer, and have the glands expressed. Groomers do this all the time. It takes a minute and he will have relief. Please don't try this yourself. If you haven't done this before, it is better to leave it to someone who has so you don't hurt him or cause problems. The groomer will make sure all the liquid is completely expelled. Please do this as soon as you possibly can. If they aren't expressed, given enough time, impaction and infection can occur.

My dog had that problem, had them expressed and then had to have them removed. At any rate, take the dog to the vet.
