2002 ford explorer won't crank and has a fast clicking noise. New Battery
My 2002 ford explorer will not start. When I try to start it all internal lights, dash/roof etc go out and there is a fast clicking noise from engine compartment and engine does not crank. Battery was replaced 1 month ago. When I first turn key to on position gauge needles fully deflect to the right and then back to the left. Then Fuel and battery gauges read normal. Incidentaly a couple of months ago I discovered that the wiring under the dash rubs against the brake release lever and on of the wires was bare. I heard a crackle when releasig the brake and the stereo, electric windows and moon roof stopped working.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

If the starter motor doesn't turn, but the starter solenoid (relay) "clicks" when the ignition switch is turned to Start, the problem is with the battery, starter solenoid, or starter motor connections. Therefore:

. Repair the bare wire with heat shrink tubing or electrical tape, after disconnecting the negative battery cable.

. Check all under dash and under hood fuses with a test light or multimeter.

. Remove and fully charge the battery, which most auto parts stores will do for free. Even new batteries should be charged, prior to installation. Clean the battery terminals and cable connections with abrasive cloth. Clean the negative battery cable where it attaches to the car's body. Ensure connections are tight.

. Disconnect the negative battery cable and clean the connections going to the starter motor.

. Check the ignition switch for wear, pitting, or melting--replace, if necessary.
