Can I change my child's last name after I am married?
How about if the 'd.n.a' hasn't been around in a year and half and hasn't paid a dime in support. We were not married , but I gave her his last name and it was the biggest mistake I have ever made. I am engaged to be married to a man who has been her sole provider for almost 2 yrs now and she is only 28 months old he has watched her.crawl, first steps, first words etc. also put a roof over her head . Her 'father' is a drug addict , a big loser! I would like to remove his last name period. Is that possible? AND P.S all woman aren't what you men say. It's because you had a relationship with them and have them emotions towards them.. don't quote women in general unless you have been with all of them and know every single one... sorry had to put that in there :P

I moved your post to a place of its own.

As for an answer. You need to wait until you have been married and then you can apply through the courts for a name change. The bio father will have to be contacted. If you wait a year and your new husband agrees then you can apply for a step parent adoption and do the name change then.

What have you done to try to get child support from the bio father?

A birth certificate is a legal document. To change it requires a court order. Most courts will require that you attempt to contact the father to get permission for a name change or adoption.

As to your comment about woman not being what men say. This person was good enough to have sex with. Now he's a no goodnik. We see this all the time. Maybe if you had been more careful about getting to really know him before you decided to have sex with him, you wouldn't have.

No, what name you gave her doesn't really have any legal effect, other than to establish what her "legal name" is. If, for example, your last name is "A" and his last name is "B", you could have given her the last name of "C" if you wanted. Is he named as the father on the birth certificate?
