How long can a bank account be garnished
I am a person receiving social security disability payments monthly. I have to use a wheel chair because of my disability. In February, 2008, after almost 20 years working part time at the same job, I was laid off. That money was used primarily to pay my credit card debts, and along with the recession and my disability, I could not find employment, and therefore could no longer pay my debts.
With the hope of finding another job, I used my savings to make the monthly payments to my creditors. With that gone and no other income available, I had to stop paying on my cards.
I now live on my monthly disability payments. There is no more money and there probably won't be. I was just notified that my bank account is being garnished. My social security deposit will be secure, but I wondered how long this garnishment will stay in effect? What if I receive an insurance settlement or an inheritance of some sort? I would really appreciate any information anyone has in this matter.
    Thank you.

Make sure that no further monies are deposited in your bank account. Have any payments sent directly to your house or a post office box number.

If you know the amount they are trying to clear up, you will have to keep track of payments coming out of your bank accounts to make sure that no more than the final amount is taken out.

What makes you think that? While your SS is exempt, your bank doesn't know where the money is from. Once its in your account if they receive a writ of attachment they have to execute it against the full balance. You can inform your bank that the only source of deposits is SS, but that might not forestall the account being frozen.

Also how were you informed about the attachment? Usually one isn't informed until after the write is served and executed.
