    Filing US tax from India
    Hi,

I had come to US in 2001 (H1 visa), but I had to return immediately (in 2 mnths), and I didn't earn anything during that stay.

Again, I went to US, and was working for 4 months (L1 visa), from Aug. 2006 till Dec. 2006, after which I returned to India.

I have received my W2 form. But I'm not sure how to file US taxes from India.

Can anyone please assist by providing more details as to :
    1. What forms I need to fill
    2. Where do I file?
    3. What documents do I need to submit?
    4. Is it possible to file online?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Regards,
    Sudha.

    Sudha:

If you were paid by your India-based company in India rupees, then you may not have ANY tax liability.

Not likely, since you have a W-2, so you need to file as a non-resident alien.

    1) File Form 1040NR-EZ.

    2) Mail the return to the IRS Center in Austin, Texas.

    3) Form 1040NR-EZ with a Form W-2 attached. You also need to file a state tax return if you worked in one of the 43 states that had state tax returns.

    4) No.

    Thanks a lot.

Can you also please let me know if it would be OK, if I send the scanned documents or fax the documents to a friend at US to do the needful?

I have had circumstances where that was done, but your friend MUST have a power of attorney for you, since the tax return is a LEGAL DOCUMENT that must have an original signature on it.

Why not download the documents, fill out the return and mail it from India? The IRS will direct deposit the refund to any U.S.-based bank account or, failing that, will send the refund check ANYWHERE in the world.
