Mom's Checking Account After She Passed Away
My Mom passed away last month. My name is on her checking account along with her's. She received an insurance check to repair the roof of her's and my house, my name is on the deed along with her's. We have lived in this house for over 4 years. I have been her caregiver for around 6 years and have lived with her since 2001 at her request. I deposited the check into her account on the advice of her insurance agent. Someone told me I could be in trouble. She didn't have a will and there isn't an executor of estate. Am I in trouble?
    Thank You

You shared a joint checking account so there was nothing wrong depositing the cheque into the account. If she didn't have a will, now is the time to talk to a lawyer.

Are you a named insured on the insurance policy? If so, you should have been on the check.

If not, strictly speaking, the insurance company could protest if you deposited the check into what is in effect your account. Will they? I doubt it.
