    Can a creditor garnish your check without going to court?

    My experience is that they can NOT. They would need a court order, which means they won a case against you for a certain amount.

    No, they would have to obtain a court order after getting a judgement. However, once they get a judgement, they don't have to inform you of the court proceedings to obtain the garnishment,
