    Rewiring an old chandelier
    Good morning,

I have been given a really old 7 arm bronze chandelier. The thing is really impressive, it must weigh at least 40lbs! It still has its original wiring; the strands are whitish and the insulation appears to be made of some kind of rubber which crumbles to dust at the slightest touch. The whole thing being covered in some kind of silken woven sheath.
How to I go about rewiring this nifty piece? Thank you very much for your help.

    Best wishes,

    Boyard

Here are a couple of previous answers to the same question.

One other thing I will add is the fact that the fixture is 40 pounds. Keep in mind the standard 4 inch round/octagon ceiling outlet box is only rated for 35 pounds, and code requires additional support for anything over.

A good alternative is any outlet box that is rated for paddle fans. There are many styles on the market.

Or any means to support the fixture other than just the two #8-32 screws will work.

Hope this helps. If you need more info get back with your questions and we can go from there.

I am re-wiring an eight light chandelier that was wired in a series. I would like a formula to figure the maximum wattage for a given wire, or the wire size required to obtain a certain maximum wattage. Would the formula also work if the chandelier was not wired in series?
