    Problem with new tub and toilet install
    Just bought a house built in the 60's and immediately finished a bathroom in the basement. A sink was already installed and a toilet stub was already in place. We had the toilet drain moved a bit and had a bathtub installed.

    Problem: when flushing the toilet that is a few feet away from it you can hear noises at the tub drain.

    This new bathroom also shares a vent pipe with 2 bathrooms above it.

    Option 1: Clogged vent pipe... BUT, If the noises I am hearing are because of the main vent pipe being clogged then why don't I hear them when one of the upstairs toilets are flushed or when any of the other upstairs plumbing is in use.

    Option 2: Clog in main drain line... BUT again, why the noises only when that toilet is flushed.

    Could there be an option 3... like a mistake or laziness by the plumber?

    Oh & almost forgot... basement toilet was having a little difficulty flushing... I used a plunger on it & it flushes strong now but the noise is still there.

    Are you sure there is a trap on the tub? They would have had to excavate a pit to get the trap in. If you don't have proper venting and the toilet flushes toward the tub, you could be hearing the system trying to vent through the tub trap.

    While I'm sure the tub was trapped I'm not so sure it was vented correctly. The sound you hear is the Tub pulling air through the trap seal attempting to vent. I would double check the installation. Good luck, Tom

    Okay... I learned a little more today from another worker who is very trustworthy who saw what the plumber did...

    The plumber did put in a p trap for the tub.

    The plumber also used Air Admittance Valves for both the tub & the toilet. I can understand that for the tub since it is on a different wall, but I don't understand why he did that for the toilet... the main vent line was already there and being used for the sink that is right next to the toilet. He could have just tied the toilet vent into it very easily.

    Thoughts, Ideas, Questions?

    Then either the AAV has failed or the job was installed incorrectly. If I were you I'd call in a sharp plumber to check your installation. Good luck and let me know what he found.
