That will depend on the material of the floor. Are we talking cement slab or some other material? Let me know, Tom

Floor is plywood. I don't care to remove the drain, just want to plug it to keep methane out. Carpet will go over the floor, so a little bump is not a problem as it will be under the shelving.

First remove the flange and stuff rags down in the closet bend to seal it off leaving 3 or 4 inches open. You may now fill the hole with cement to the floor level. Allow a few days to cure and cover it with carpet. Good luck, Tom

Cut the flange at floor level and use a Fernco PVC pipe cap. Lay a thin luan ply over it and carpet. The next person might want a toilet there!

Thanks, but the pipe is cast iron and not PVC. Is there a different plug that would work?

That does change things. Is the, flange leaded over the cast iron hub. Is there a hub or just a stub with a flange. If it is just a stub, get a test plug that will fit the stub and tighten it. You may have to cut the carpet to fit around the plug but if it's under a shelf and you don't mind it's easiest way to plug it. If you are sure you will never use the pipe then fill it with concrete like Tom said.

The toilet flange is leaded to the waste pipe.
