    Alternator replacement
I have a 99 Ford Explorer V6 Auto with Air and want to check the output of the alternator -where and how with a meter? Also is the alternator drive belt on the serpentine belt ? Is it easy enough for a guy handy with tools to do ? Tks. Dave.

On a Ford Explorer, the serpentine belt drives the alternator. You might be able to use a 15" breaker bar, with a 3/8" adapter attached, to fit into a 3/8" square hole on the tensioner. This will allow you to remove and reinstall the serpentine belt. Sketch the routing of the belt before removal.

The easiest way to test the alternator is to take the vehicle to an auto parts store. Most will test for free. Their equipment will load test the alternator, which you won't be able to do, in all likelihood, with your test equipment. They will also test the diodes in the voltage regulator, which you may or may not be able to do.

If you decide to go further, buy a Haynes Manual. I enjoy rebuilding alternators. I can clean the commutator, replace the bearings and brushes, and test the diodes for $20. If you decide to go this route, make sure the bearings come with polyurea grease. Polyurea-based grease minimizes the possibility an electrical arc could ignite seeping oil from the bearings.
