6-8 weeks, check with the vet when he/she starts the series of "puupy shots" and most will also want to deworm.

I don't like store bought puppy formulas.. I like the made at home kind..

Here is a recipe of puppy formula that I used on my own puppies.. They were nice, fat, healthy little pups and there was no problem whatsoever getting them to eat it.

    Source: Leerburg | Bottle Feeding

10 oz. of canned evaporated milk OR whle goat's milk (not pasteurized cow's milk - this will cause scowers - dogs cannot drink normal cow's milk. Dogs cannot drink 1%, 2%, Skim, or Whole milk.) Whole goat's milk is by far the best to use. Walmart sells both evaporated milk, whole goat's milk and evaporated goats milk. Make sure you are using EITHER evaporated milk OR whole goat's milk. Do NOT use sweetened condensed milk!

•3 oz. sterilized water (baby water OR boiled water that is then cooled). This is NOT needed if using whole goat's milk.
    •1 raw egg yolk.
•1 cup of plain yogurt (avoid skim or fat free if at all possible).
•1/2 Tsp Karo Syrup or Corn Syrup (NOT HONEY!)
    • ****If you cannot find Karo or Corn syrup where you live, you can do a Google search for “substitute for Karo syrup” and get some options.****

When I Googled “substitute for Karo syrup" here is what I came up with- 1 c Karo can be subbed with 1 c white sugar and 1/4 c hot water (cook it to dissolve in the water best you can get it to. Depending on the recipe, if you need the sugar to be completely dissolved you might need to add a bit more water).

Place ingredients in a blender and blend or use a wire whisk. Be careful to not over blend and create a milk shake full of bubbles and then tube bubbles into the puppy.

Keep cool and discard leftovers after 7 days.

Warm formula to body temperature (dogs are around 101 degrees). Discard any un-used formula. This is a thick mixture - use a stomach tube to tube feed or enlarge the hole in the nipple for easy access for the pup

If this is your litter, some breeders will take them in for a check up either 1-2 days old for tail docking and dewclaw removal, or at 1 week after birth. Doesn't hurt to take them in prior to finding them homes for a health check by a vet and a dewormer.

Contact your vet and ask when the dewormer program should begin..

Force her to lay down with them. You might have to be there with her while she is nursing them. If she refuses to nurse them and you are afraid she might harm them, its bottle time for you!

Some dogs are not good mothers. Those dogs should be spayed immediately. If you are a breeder, or a budding breeder, I'm sure you don't want to spend all of your time bottle feeding the puppies.

I, on the other hand, enjoyed bottle feeding puppies. Its an amazing experience. Hopefully you won't have to do this... but its pretty fun if you do.

I went on vacation a year ago expecting to lay on the beach with a milk shake in my hand watching the dolphins in the waves.instead I had the wonderfully enriching experience of raising pups whose mother did not have enough milk to feed all nine puppies! That's right nine pups.the cutest little ninee day old baby's I have evr seen.at nine days the pups eyes were still closed and they were very tiny.they barely fit in my hand.they can't see and if not fed enough the will cry constantly.a big clue because a happy puppy is one that is sleeping! this guide will help you bring up newborn puppies by hand.it will save their life and will enrich your life.I can't tell you how satisfied I felt to see these little guys grow and become healthy.here are things you will need to feed the puppies.I got them at the local drug store and the local grocery store.
    1.premie baby bottles
2.canned or frozen goat or evaporated milk
    3.paper towels
4.12x12 cotton towels or clean rags for cleaning
5.extra nipples and a sterilized needle
6.a baby's toy pool lined with towels
    7.a friend to help out
during my third week on vacation their eyes openend and pretty soon I couldsee they started to regonize me.when I started getting all the milk and towels ready for these bay dogs they would start crying and crawl and crawl their way into the room I was in.it was a little army of pups crying and whining and following the sound of the first pup being fed.it was the cutest thing I ever saw.you should have seen the look on the mother dogs face it was like well what am I chopped liver? all puppys got fed but it took hours to feed all puppies best to get a friend to help you out it will cut the time in half.I always started with the smallest puppy first and let the big guys wait for their feeding.pretty soon the smallest and weakest baby's will gain back their strengh and although they will ussually never be as big as the well fed pups.they will be well on their way to a happy life with lots of good milk to drink and less stress.you can see the stress on the mothers face.also puppies need to be clean.help the mother out by washing the puppys dirty spots with warm water not hot not cold just nice and warm be sure to put them in a warm towel to dry off.the mum might even lick them to help the drying process.do not put puppies outside if they are wet.try to keep the area the live in as clean as possible by mopping the floor just after they have been fed and are sleeping.do your laundry now because you will need fresh clean towels about 3 times a day.give the mother dog some extra loving because suddenly she is being ignored because you are spending all your time with the puppies.my dog tina was very good about this she knew I was helping but she had this look of puzzlement on her face.she knew something was wrong and I swear she was blaming herself.

I'm answering the how old to vet question. Any time after they are born. I've been at the Vet's office with newborns.
