What to do if I am being paid less than employees I supervise?
I work at a small company founded by the current CEO. I have been with the company the longest and helped develop core services of the business. I work closely with the CEO on a day-to-day basis and manage all internal operations. We recently hired two employees (about 6 months ago). I am their supervisor, and have more responsibilities; however, I recently discovered that I am making $10,000 less than one, and $15,000 less than the other. What should I do?

I see room to negotiate for a larger pay raise... if you play it right.

How did you discover this? Salary info is kept very confidential partially for this reason. So if you found out illicitly, you may be in trouble if you bring it to the CEO's attention. And, also are you sure of your facts?

If you found out properly in the course of your duties, then I would schedule a meting with the CEO and discuss it with him. Tell him you feel you have been an integral part of the growth and current success of the company and should be compensated accordingly.

You also need to understand that sometimes a company may be forced to pay above their salary structure to get certain skills. And it may be difficult to adjust existing employees to coordinate. I don't know if that is the case here, but it does happen.

I often managed people who were paid more than me, since I managed tech people who were hired for various skills. So just the fact you manager higher paid employees is not really the entire issue. How does your pay compare to other managers in this same business.
Do you have the same skills and abilities of these people. Same degrees and so on.
