    Copper or PEX when repiping?
When repiping a home, is copper better than PEX? We live on a hill and have rats nearby on the hillside living in ivy. One plumber said that copper would be the best and that rats can get to the PEX. Is this true? We have had rats in the walls on occasion (not too much but every once in a while, about twice in 10 years). I have heard that copper last longer than PEX.

Copper is more expensive and difficult to use in a repiping. Rats and mice can chew Pex and PVC or Cpvc but its your call. Twice in 10 years and who is to say they will chew uour pipes just because they got in. I'd spend a few dollars baiting the rats.

Pex, PPr, PVC.. Is the future of piping! Copper- expansion, heat loss, lack of flexibility etc. it's not worth it!

I would suggest pex, and get an exterminater to take care of the rats, and a contractor to seal the home so no more rats can get in. Pex will outlast copper in most instances.

Repiping with Pex [ 81 Answers ]

Thanks to all those who have helped thus far. I have decided I will move forward with repiping my house with Pex, but I have a couple of planning questions. 1) What size PEX should I use? I am thinking 1" from the main, 3/4" branches and then 1/2" to the fixtures? Does that make sense? 2)...

1/2'' copper down to PEX - which size PEX is best? [ 1 Answers ]

We're finishing our basement and I want to re-run the kitchen supply line because the 1/2'' copper runs underneath (perpendicular) to the 16'' on center joists and thus lowers the ceiling by a full inch (it will need to be shimmed). I want to install PEX that runs through the center of the joists...

Pex vs Copper [ 5 Answers ]

Is it better to use copper instead of pex if you are worried about leaks? I'm in the process rehabing some apartments and the plumbers used pex instead of copper. I wanted them to run home-runs but they resisted and I ended up with pex fittings inside of walls. Now I'm reading about a class...

Using pex and copper [ 3 Answers ]

We are redoing the majority of the supply in a house we are remodeling. Is there any code or standard on using pex when attaching the water heater. The supply comes in the house as copper. Can we convert it after the meter to pex or do we have to wait until after the water heater? If so, how far...
