Leak in basement from kitchen sink
When I run my kitchen sink water the main pipe downstairs has water around it on the floor. What should I do to solve this?

More details please. Is "main pipe downstairs" overhead in the basement? What material is the pipe? Where, exactly, is the leak? At a joint? Threaded, soldered in or a lead and oakum joint? Please post back with more information. Rewgards, Tom

The main pipe is in the basement. There is no water under the sink and can't see where it is coming from in the ceiling of the basement but the water runs down the main pipe and ends up soaking the floor. We know it's the sink because we have run the water for several minutes and checked afterwards to find a puddle. We have noticed that when we run the disposal that it will spew water and gunk up and out the otherside of the sink so not sure if that would have anything to do with the leak as well. I'll have to ask my husband what type of pipe it is when he gets home.

This tells me that you have a blockage that's giving you back pressure. First things first! Remove the trap bend and send a snake into the wall. You'll hit a 90 about 8 inches in but once around that you only have to put out 6 foot more. Now try the disposal. If it works then check for the leak. If it still leaks click on back and tell me about it. Good luck, Tom

Thanks for your time Tom. My husband did snake today and the non disposal side still gurgles a bit. Nothing has came back up... yet. I guess when I run the water tomorrow doing dishes I'll check to see if water is on the floor in the basement:) I appreciate some insight on our problem and have a feeling if it continues, a plumber will called! Lol thanks

A gurgle indicates that the sink is attempting to vent through the trap. If it's a gurgle and not a bubble I'd also snake the kitchen roof vent. Put out enough snake to reach the base and 15 feet more. Good luck, Tom

Well Tom we took the panel that's in our main bathroom only to find a gash in the PVC pipe and it runs straight down into the basement where we have been finding the puddle. Obviously we are losing pressure and believe this is the cause of the drain problem. We moved our stove and cut a hole to access the pipe and found another crack on another pipe! So we are having those pipes replaced! Let's hope this fixes all the problems! I'll keep u posted:)
