    Maytag guidance
Having a problem with my Maytag Fridge/Freezer Model-MTB1956DE. The fridge & freezer would not get cold. In calling a service guy in he found that the starter on the motor needed to be replaced so we did that and it seems to start up and everything seemed to go back to normal. Now it seems that the fridge needs to get around 45 degrees and the freezer to about 34 degrees before it starts up. In moving the cold control knob (colder) it does not to seem to make a difference. I have noticed that if I move the cold control knob to one (or off)and then slide it to 5 the unit will start up and cool the fridge/freeze down. In reading a lot of the other questions I am wondering if I should replace the Cold Control Switch or the Deforst Timer Switch? Anyone's help would be appreciated.

It sounds like you have a problem with the thermostat, but make sure the coils are clean, first, because dirty coils can affect a lot. If you have to replace the thermostat make sure to expose the exact length of capillary tube that the old one did and leave the rest carefully coiled up in the recess in refrigerator wall without any sharp bends and without touching any electrical terminals. It's best to go to an HVAC parts store and buy a universal replacement kit because the ones from Maytag are overpriced and unreliable. Take in the old one so you can get a close match. The kits, like those made by Ronco, will exactly duplicate your old one as long as you remember to install the exact amount of cap tube exposed as the old one had and in the same location. Take your time putting it in and be careful not to kink of bend sharply the cap tube or it will be ruined. A new universal is about $15, a new one from Maytag by same manufacturer is $138.00. There are only a few t-stat makers that make them for all appliances, just as there are only a few makers for compressors and fans, etc. The appliance maker just assembles the parts purchased from different makers.

    Thanks drtom4444
The coils have been cleaned. I will go out tomorrow to a HVAC store and look for a universal theromstat.

    Thanks again.

I'm sure they will fix you up. Look for Baker Distributing (Used to be Baker Brothers.) or C.C.****son. If I knew what city you are in I could help you. In most southern states the above-named stores are best, although Johnstone Supply is very good, they won't sell to you without a referral from someone in the appliance business.
