    The telephone company charges a total of 0.80 for the first 3 minutes and 0.23 for each additional minute for a long distance call to a particular city. IF a call to this city costs $4.00 how long was the call?

    Straightforward enough.

    $4.00 - 0.80 = x
    x/0.23 = y minutes
    so y +3 = total minutes.
