Replacing an old 3 wire speed switch for ceiling fan
    Hi,

I have an old ceiling fan.
The chain of the speed switch broke and the fan stayed on constantly.
    I bought a 3-4 wire switch.

The old switch had only 3 wires ! (no place for a fourth)
The wires were organized red, blue, black.
There are no numbers or letters on the old switch.
Next to the blue cord it is written UL.
The live wire is the black one.
There is a white wire in the fan that is not connected to anything.

I tried connecting the 3 wires to the new switch as they were ordered on the old fan (leaving no. 3 slot open)
I tried connecting the black to the UL spot and playing with the position of the blue.
    NOTHING WORKS

Any advice on how to systematically find the right order and what to do with the white cord ?
