Taxes for Indian student on CPT
    Hi experts,

I am an Indian student on F1 visa enrolled in a program in Florida, I ve been here for a year and now I have moved to NYC for an intern (on a CPT now for next 7-8 months), what kind of taxes do I have to pay? And of what state do I claim residency for NY or FL(if any)?

    Thank you for your response.

Due to your international student status, you are a non-resident of BOTH Florida and New York.

The international student status also makes you exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes. If your employer IS withholding FICA taxes, download IRS Pub 519 from www.irs.gov and print out pages 51 - 57, which explains the exemption. Your employer can then stop withholding and refund what HAS already been withheld.

You are liable for federal INCOME taxes on the money earned while on CPT.

Florida has NO state income tax.

New York state AND New York city BOTH have income taxes. You must pay the New York STATE income tax, but I believe you can send in a copy of your F-1 visa to NYC to be exempt from the NY CITU income tax.

If you need professional help filing, look up my email address in my progfile or signature and email me.
