My W2 reads that the total income for 6 months is 20,523.16 where 2177.77 dollars has been withheld for federal taxes and 921.77 for state taxes. You must file nonresident tax return Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ and form 8843. Since you are from India, as per tax treaty you will claim standard deduction of $5700 (as itemized deduction) on your tax return. You will also get exemption of $3700. So your taxable income is $20,523 - 9400. On this amount you will pay 10% federal income tax so you will have refund from IRS. Your U.S. Tax Return: U.S. Tax Filing Requirements for Non-Residents

Your tax liability is $1,244, so your refund will be $934.

You will need to file as a non-resident for the state of Minnesota.
