I'm 26 years old and moved into my mom and stepdads house with two teenage girls to help take care of the family, (mother has a medical condition). We have a detached two-car garage in the backyard. Needless to say, with one bathroom in the house we would like to turn the unused garage into an apartment for myself. The garage is about 25 feet from the house with access from the alleyway. The bathroom is the biggest hang up so far, (kitchen isn't really necessary) a plumber quoted us $10,000 just to have a sewage and water line ran to garage, NOT a good number.

So I've been looking into alternative ways of adding a bathroom. I've researched composting toilets and have met people that swear that by them. I've looked into self-contained sinks, and changing the waste water container wouldn't be a problem. I've also researched greywater filtration systems that would turn the shower and possibly sink and laundry water into irrigation water. Now we have a garden, but it's untouched, and well... if I got the greywater system, I'd just be dumping cleaned water into the ground. Now I could get water just from a garden hose with frost-free equipment, but still hung up on drainage, especially for a shower.

I'm asking for help on suggestions for this type of project into adding a bathroom into a garage without conventional plumbing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Before I can offer much help can you tell us your town and state. Plumbing codes vary and I don't think you have many options.

Bob's right! WE have to know what code you fall under. You have come up with some pretty cmplicated ways to install a simple bath. If wet vents are allowed bin your area why not do it right? Here's how we install our bathrooms, (see image) Since you're all tore up any how why not add a kitchen sink and stove and make it a complete unit? Let me know what you think. Regards, Tom
