Wanting to swap a utility room and a laundry room...
We are about to move into a new house, and it has the laundry in a walk-through pantry. (you enter from the garage, walk through the pantry into the kitchen - the laundry is on one side of that pantry.) Upstairs, almost right above that area, is the utility room with the furnace, water heater, and a small water softener.

My question is would it be a huge and expensive project to swap the two? I realize it's hard to say without seeing the property, but surely this has been done before?

    Thanks!

Yes, it would be expensive. In additon to replumbing, you will also need to run vents for the heater and hot water heater through a concealed wall space, add new distribution runs for the HVAC somewhere, replumb the gas to the lower level, and then add electrical service if it is an electric dryer. Your configuration is almost identical to mine. However, our BR's are on the main level so having it in the pantry is great for us. A much cheaper solution would be to install a clothes chute to drop the clothing to the first level. However, if this is new construction, you will probably need to install a fire door on the chute.

In the back of my house I have a 1/2 bath with the washer and dryer in the bathroom. On the other side of the wall there is a 12'X12' slab of concrete. Smell in utility room [ 4 Answers ]

Over the last two months we have had a rotten smell coming out of our utility room. We know it is not our drier or our washing machine and there are no leaks around any of the connecting pipes. We have also checked the u-bend under the sink as well as the dishwasher outlet pipe and are mystified. A...

Installing a utility sink in the laundry room [ 4 Answers ]

Hi, I want to hook up a utility sink next to my washing machine on the first floor. The washer discharges into a standpipe. The standpipe has a trap, and then connects through a tee to a vertical waste pipe (drain stack?) that goes upstairs through the roof as a vent. Below this tee, there is...

I am considering a conversion of my utility room into a pool side bathroom and flipping the W/D to the opposite wall. Can a washer, toilet, shower, and sink run off the existing sewer and vent pipe? Additionally, my house is built on slab foundation.
