    Replacing an old toilet
    We are about to start a bathroom remodeling. How can I determine the rough in distance I have without removing the current toilet? We really need to have the replacement on site before we disconnect the old one.

    Hi Ipmsfl...

    To find the "ROUGH IN DISTANCE" measure from the FINISH WALL behind the toilet to the center of the TOILET BOWL CAPS at the base of the toilet bowl. Do not measure from the baseboard (if present)... measure from the wallboard to the center of the caps (see image).

    If your meaure is 9-11"...called a 10" rough (limited choices here and may need to be special ordered).

    If your measure is 11.5-13"...called a 12" rough (most toilets fall here).

    And if your measure exceeds 13" you will need to order a 14" rough in toilet (limited choices and may need to be special ordered for some toilet brands).

    Bye the way. What is your measure? Do you need instructions on removing the old toilet and installing the new one?

    I've removed a toilet so I understand that part. I wanted to make sure that I understood the "rough in" concept so that I purchased a replacement that would work on the first try. THANKS!
