How long does it take to get a duplicate check. Should I be penalized for late rent?

I have never heard of late SS direct deposits and wonder if it might be a bank problem instead - your bank's bankwire shut down or glitched on Friday?
A landlord does not have to accept any excuse for late rent, sorry. You can try talking to him or her, but you may be told that you should have a cushion of savings to cover such emergencies.

But no, the landlord does not have to many exceptions because your payment is late. You can ask them, talk to them, but you should hopefully be making arrangements for things like this, in case it happens. ( a small emergancy fund)

But your LL is not required to give you any leeway because of this. If you have a news story to that effect you can show it to them and hope for some consideration.

And to be honest if it was "hundreds" that is nothing, I would guess the Social Security mess up several 100 every month just as a norm, Since the are doing millions of checks

Yes, I was one of the lucky ones. Social Security spoke with my Bank to verify the routing number and acct number etc. They confirmed that it was sent to the Bank. The Bank insists that it was not received. They require that Social Security do a trace which takes 10 business days however the local Social Security Office has reassured me they can issue a replacement check in 5 business days I am grateful yet too late to avoid late fees on several bills.

Your theory about the bank problems has one flaw. My Bank was not the only bank involved in the non receivable direct deposits. Thank you for you comment.

How do you know that several hundred were involved? The way direct deposit works, is a file is sent to a central clearing house where its processed. The file contains the information about thousands of accounts. The file is processed and transmitted to the member banks who then credit your account. So it is possible that somewhere a glitch occurred where a bunch of transactions were lost.
