do I need to install anything under a cast iron shower base
I have purchased a 35 1/2 x 35 1/2 shower base made of cast iron. Got it with no legs. I'm wondering if I can just set it on 1x6's and not build it into a frame? It does not have any give anywhere! Very strong and doesn't need support. My floor is level and I'm not sure how to install this. Company says any pro will know. I live in a small town and not one of the contractors have ever did one, and doesn't have a clue.

    Hi Mizerxxx

Where I come from, no matter how much experience I have with a product I still will ask for installation instructions just in case there are new requirements I need to know of, so *shame on these guys* for suggesting that "any pro will know"... that is simply unacceptable! I would call them back and tell them the pro. You hired wants proper installation instructions... no guessing... period!

Now, for what it's worth, at a minimum, install the cast iron shower pan on top of the plywood subfloor... then lock the base in using the concrete board and tile. Do NOT install directly on top of 1"x6" floor joists... ;) Check with the manufacturer to see if they want you to use some construction adhesive or shimming under the legs... can't take any chances if you plan on tiling the walls above this, right?

Finally, almost no floor is perfectly level from side to side and from front to back so double check that, OK?

Glad to discuss more if you want...

I'm not much of a plumber, but what do you mean 'into a frame?' You want a free standing shower, or do you mean build a new higher base under it (so you can install the trap and drain above your floor?), or do you mean the usual framing on 2 or 3 sides? If it doesn't rock I see no reason to put a glob of concrete under it. If it has a little lip around the edge, install it snugly against the studs and put backer board over the lip as you would a tub. If you want to put it up on 2 x 6's with a step, there's no reason why not.

Thanks for your input. I did call the co. and was told it can be installed in many different ways. It doesn't need support undernith. It is over 120lbs and about 5" thick cast iron. We are going to build frame and set down into. Then use cement board to inclose and tile. This pan is amazing!! Life time warrenity, will never crack!! I'm using the exposed shower kit with round shower ring. I have a claw foot tub in upstairs b/room, put in when house was built in 1890. The tub looks like new still. I wanted the cast iron since it will out last us ALL. Try to find another shower pan that will out last the human race!! Can't Thanks for your thoughts.
