    Shakes, hunger etc? Hypoglycemia
I've suffered what I call the 'sugar shakes' for as long as I can remember, but I've always been able to live with it. I usually get attacks 2 or 3 times a month, usually close together.

It starts with a kind of burning sensation, then hunger kicks in, then I start sweating and get really shaky & find it hard to function. As soon as I get something to eat I feel better again - it makes me crave sweet foods when I don't normally have a sweet tooth. It can happen when I've had plenty to eat already - totally random. On once occasion I woke up with an attack after a big night out (too much booze!) & had to crawl to the kitchen. Last time I was at the docs I mentioned it but hadn't had an attack for a while. My blood tests were fine - but I've noticed the attacks are getting more aggressive - the last one my lips and mouth felt as if it had pins and needles I was pouring with sweat and felt all over the place.

I presume this couldn't be diabetes or my blood test would've picked it up? Is this hypoglycemia? Or does the timing of the blood test make a difference?

Your pancreas is definitely sending messages. The booze (lot of sugar) your random eating. You had a blood test and I can only assume your doctor called up the right categories to find out if it is type one or two. Strange. Did you explain exactly how you felt?

I actually have a healthy diet & eat regularly - the night out was very much a one off. What puzzles me is that I get these attacks when I've had plenty to eat so don't understand what triggers them. My weight is stable and my BMI is healthy, and I exercise regularly.

I guess I just need another trip to the docs as I don't know what they tested for last time.

Hi chickenpie,. your attacks sound very much like.. VASOVAGAL ATTACKS... a condition involving slowing heartbeat reducing blood pressure and circulation. This then causes fainting in most cases but not always. There are many causes for it which include lack of sleep, trauma, illness, fever, fasting, standing or sitting in the same position for to long, getting up to quickly when bending down... plus many others.

Although they sound quite scarey they are quite common and can have been with some people from childhood.
Some say it's an over active VAGUS NERVE that triggers now and again. However I suffer from these myself, with all your symptoms which also puts me out of work for a few days feeling like I've had 1 over the 8,talking is difficult as is everything else until it clears.

My son however who is a diabetic is sure that I suffer from drops in blood sugar as the symptoms are almost identical, especially if I'm gardening or doing something else that's a bit too much for me, he always thrust a cup of well sugared tea in my hand and that does the trick, like you I had the blood test that was fine, the difference between the VASOVAGEL ATTACKS and the shaking sugar episodes is that I don't pass out, once it passes I'm fine again, so I think we have 2 separate things here.

I think the best thing you can do is go back to your doctor and tell him of your concerns, explain that there is still a problem, it could be that you just have a drop in sugar sometimes.

Go too your doctor for a correct diagnoses.

Good idea, chick, but just remember it is always best to take the time you need in the doctor's office to explain all of your symptoms; even though they seem to be rushed, and rushed enough to make you see it.
