Will the wife be responsible for her husband's tax cheats?
The wife wants to report her husband to the IRS because the husband has been cheating on the IRS to not pay his fair share. The wife and the husband have been filing together for the past year, but she did not know he has been cheating until recently. She realized that her husband has been cheating on the IRS for the past 10 years. The wife does have evidence to provide.

    The questions are:
    1. If she reports the husband, will she also be responsible for paying back - Will IRS go after her as well since they are married?
    2. What will happen if the husband turns himself in to the IRS before the wife reports him?
    3. What will happen to the husband if IRS finds him guilty? Will he be in jail ?
    4. Will the wife receive the "whistleblower bonus" from IRS?

If you both have been filing jointly, then you are in the same bailywick as he if he has been cheating. You be looked upon as a cheater too. Yes, IRS will go after you. So... how much money is involved here, thousands..

Whistleblower discount... what is this... and why do you want to rat on your husband if no one has found out yet ?

Thank you so much for the answer... So here are some follow up qiestions and hope you can answer!
Even when the wife is only a green card holder? The husband is an US citizen. What if she returns to her home country first and then she reports him - Will IRS go after her in a different country? She has a daughter who's a citizen here, will the IRS go after her daughter?
She does not know how much money is involved yet, but 10 years should be a lot..

There is an innocent spouse form available to file with your taxes if you have been affected by his tax debt... but the IRS will find it very hard to swallow that after ten years, you didn't know.
