Yes, panic attacks can do a lot of damage; there is no medication that will stop them. The person having them must over come them with sheer willpower and counselling. She needs to see a professional who can talk her through ways to deal with panic attacks.

Attribution of the above described to "panic attack" is ill advised. Serious symptoms indeed. Seek emergency medical intervention not counseling!

There are many medications that work in conjunction with therapy so that your friend can recognize her panic attack triggers and deal with overcoming the attacks.

I need to apologize. I read Tickle post wrong. I thought that it said medication and counseling, but said no medication will help which is wrong. EDIT: Tickle is right she said no medication will stop them.
At the same time, this person has been seeing by medical intervention which does and should include counseling as well. Along with Medical professionals help. 911 was called and obviously is being taken care of.
Next time Dr Bill when you address me by Pm make sure you include a link and tell me what your talking about. To advice me not to agree or post, you have no right.
As far as symptoms and everything else. Been having those myself since June last year and has sought medical help which does not seem to be getting me anywhere. Gasping for air, severe muscle twitches and shaking, and heart racing , etc...

Hi jesushelper, I didn't say no meds, I said there are no meds that will stop a panic attack. I am saying that because I have two clients at the moment who do have panic attacks, and they are monitored closely, counselled, (they are elderly) are doing well with no meds.

Your absolutely right Tickle. I need to read a lot more carefully. Whew, felt like backtracked several times today. Your right no meds will stop them, help get them under control but not stop them.
Thanks for pointing that out Tickle. Actually for Dr Bill to make a statement that counseling will not help or is ill advised is wrong.
Medical advice was already sought out, now it is time for counseling as well.

In the early stages of a panic attack, medications such as Ativan will indeed stop the attack or slow the progression.
