First part of the root canal to kill the root...
Hi All,
I just need a bit of advice. Today I had the first part of my root canal done today, it was supposed to be the whole thing but the root of the tooth was badly infected therefore the anesthetic did not numb the nerve (as its PH sensitive and the infection was quite acidic),so it only went so far before I started to cry like a child and scream STOP!
So the dentist drilled away at the tooth until she got to the root (which killed) and said she was putting some steroids/antibiotics/something else, to kill the nerve so I will feel no pain when she finally finishes the root canal.
Not that I don't trust my dentist... BUT I am just asking if the root and nerve is dead, will I feel any pain? I cannot bare the thought of going through it all again! I can deal with being uncomfortable but not that pain.
Oh also I had it done today and she said I should be experiencing some pain after but I'm painless at the moment, No complaints there :)

Something does not sound right here. If the nerve is dead now, you won't feel pain, unless it is from the work physically done on that area of the tooth.
Was she an endodontist? This is a root canal specialist.
If the anesthetic was administered properly, given enough time to numb the area, then you should not have had any pain. When I have a root canal, I don't feel anything, but then my threshold is different. I fall asleep in the chair !
If the tooth was infected, then you should be taking antibiotics to get rid of the infection before she starts work again.
The root is the nerve, so no, if its dead then you should be feeling no pain.
Get a second opinion, this dentist does not sound right.

Yes she is a root canal specialist. I was given a 5 day course of antibiotics, this did ease the pain a lot. The root is not dead yet, she dressed it today to gradually kill the nerve. I have a very hard time being numbed anyway. The Anesthetic made it numb, but the pain was still too much to handle. She even numbed the actual root to make it better but did say from the start if the infection is very bad, then the solution will not be that effective on the root. She said the dressing she has put onto it now will gradually kill the nerve so when I come back this should make it pain free.

I have a root canaled tooth, #11, that is bothering me. I have had it for over 6 years. I got it xrayed and it showed that the post had fractured the tooth above the gumline. I was not given a choice of options on this, only to extract it. I don't want to do this. I know it can be saved somehow....
