Counseled to ignore collections - legitimate advice?
My Fiancé was counseled by an attorney that he is better off ignoring the collections agencies that are hounding him for the substantial Medical Debt (he incurred in his early twenties) for a period of 7 years. If he was to make a payment it would restart a seven year statute of limitations. Does this sound like legitimate advice?

If so is there a risk to me as I marry into the situation as a homeowner with good credit? I plan to keep the house in my name and maintain my own finances. Any advice is truly appreciated!

Its good advice to not start payments since it would extend the SOL. But its not good advice to totally ignore the bill.

Nor should his debts have any effect on you, as long as you don't put your assets in his name.

Thank you for responding, your response was helpful but I'm not sure what you meant by "not good advice to totally ignore the bill" :o are you referring to the ethical dilemma?

What would be the extent they can go if he completely ignores the bill? (I.e. jail time:eek: )

People don't go to jail for owing money. Yes there is an ethical issue here. But if they get a judgement against him they can renew that judgement and still try to collect when he finally gets a job or savings. Better to try and settle the debt.
