Burner or thermostat?
"My 20 year old furnace was not working the other day. The pilot was on but it did not kick in. Called a repair guy who said my burner was shot. He replaced it for $500 and then went to turn it on and realized my thermostat wasnt working. I said it seems like a huge coincidence my thermostat went the same day as my burner. Did I get hosed?"

80's era GE electric stove. Without warning, one burner (coil type burners) will heat up to the highest setting. You have to turn the knob to the off position to stop this & then after it's cooled off a little, turn it back on to the desired setting. Sometimes that holds, sometimes it jumps back...
