    Cavalier dies of parvo
My Cavalier King Charles Spaniel died today of Parvo. He had had two vaccine shots for parvo. And he was 7 months old. How could he have died of parvo despite of the vaccines? Please help as I am in utter sadness.

I'm so sorry to hear about your pup bluflair, unfortunately yes it is possible for a puppy to catch parvo even if they have been vaccinated. Even adult dogs who have been vaccinated yearly can still die from it, they are just even less likely.
The vaccinations are a bit like human flu shots, the greatly reduce your risk of catching the flu, but there's no guarantee you won't.

Parvo can live in the environment for years so if you have any other dogs I would be bleaching your house and yard to disinfect everything.

Shazzy hit it right on the head with her answer. Parvo is a virus that constantly mutates, so it's just like the influenza vaccines us humans get. It does protect against certain strains, but not all. Sounds like there could be a new strain in your area.

It is very un likely for an adult dog, or even a vaccinated puppy to become infected with parvo, but the chances are still there.

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy.

My answer is the same as above. Did he only have 2 vaccines as a pup? When was his last Parvo vaccine? Usually it takes 3 shots, one month between each, to be considered 'fully' protected, but even then there's still a risk.

I'm sorry for your loss. Please speak to your vet about cleaning and disenfecting your home/yard to ensure a new dog (if you decide on one) does not risk getting it as well.

I am also very very sorry to hear of your loss, I know your heart is broken :( It is also possible that because your pup was already exposed to the virus that the vaccination actually sped up the process of the virus. Like someone else stated please please bleach EVERYTHING including the ground and other dogs might go. The ONLY other way to kill parvo in the environment is EXTREMELY cold temps (like those under several feet of snow) so unless you live in an area likely to get this cold all other dogs could also be at risk.
Again, my condolences for your loss :(
