Pilot going out

I have a used Empire RH-65BLP that we installed last winter and it works great. The problem is that most of the time but not all of the time the pilot goes out when it is on. So, I light it and it comes on warms to whatever setting then the blower comes on. It gets the room nice and toasty warm but won't come on again because the pilot light is out. Argh! Please advise me as to what to do. A friend suggested the 5 inch vent pipe was too short and that we could be getting a back draft. Any help is much appreciated.
