While replacing the flooring of a bathroom, I removed the toilet and found the flange mounted to the subfloor but below the chipboard and vinyl. I ripped up the chipboard and vinyl and put down plywood, cement board, and porcelain tile around the flange. Now, the top of the flange is just about 3/4" below the finished floor. If I had this to do over, I would have removed the flange before laying the plywood, cement board, and tile. Then, I would have replaced the closet elbow and flange on top of the finished floor. But, now I'm afraid its too late to go that route. So, I'm considering replacing the closet elbow and closet flange up to height and blocking it up for something to mount to, but I am concerned about the sturdiness. The current flange is a pvc normal (outside fit) flange. It looks likes that the flange is glued directly into the 3" pvc closet elbow. It is on a wood subfloor that can be accessed from underneath the house. Is my proposed method the best route to go? I'm concerned about the longevity of a flange extender or built up wax rings. I'd rather do it right now then have to redo it after a number of year.
