Does their contract state they may have to work on weekends?
If I signed a contract with you and that said I will work Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, 50 weeks of the year and then you ask me to work on a Saturday and will not give me any compensation for it (money or an extra day off during the week), you bet I would say no.
And can you fire me? On what ground, my contract doesn’t state that I have to work on Saturday.
If you want to create this bad will with your employees, go for it. But your employee’s will be less motivated, despise working for you and wish to find another job. You want a high job turnover rate? And the employee’s might even steal from you depending on the type of business you are in. Trust me, I have seen it before, especially the theft.
If you really need this employee to work on the Saturday (or whenever), that is cool. Tell him he will get a regular scheduled work day off in lieu of compensation. You have him in a contract. If you want him for more, then why didn’t you put that in the contact?
Now if this is a one time thing, he is being a real jerk and perhaps you shouldn’t have him working at your company.
But if you have done this to him before or he has seen you do this to others, that could explain where his hostility is coming from.
