Sometimes my 1996 Ford Explorer won't start after I've driven it a while. However, after it sits for 1 to 3 hours it will fire right up. Also, if I disconnect the battery (new) for 5 min, it will start. This first happened after I had a new radiator put in (June 2010).
Also, several other things have been happening that may or may not be related. The check engine light stays on most of the time (has for 2 yrs) and shows a code for O2 sensors. Sometimes a bump in the road will make it go off for a while.
The head lights used to go off but replacing the multi-function switch stopped that.
This week, the Anti -theft system went off 3 different times while the car was sitting in the yard. Last month I noticed that the A/C compressor would kick in when the switch was turned to heat and last Sunday (Outside temp was nearly 100) the compressor started making a loud noise and smoking. I pulled off the road to see what was wrong, prayed, let it cool off a little and started the car to go on to church. Then, after the service, it wouldn't start. Two hours later, it fired right up and I drove home. This was before I had thought of disconnecting the battery, so I had to wait for it to start.
I took it to the garage and for two days he tried starting it repeatedly and it gave no problems, so he couldn't find the trouble. I got the car back, went on one errand and it wouldn't start. This was when I thought about disconnecting the battery and it has worked 3 times. What can be wrong? Will I cause more harm if I drive it (and keep the wrenches handy)?

The starting problem is likely linked to the codes being thrown. When you disconnect the battery, the codes being stored in the PCM may be temporarily erased, allowing the engine to start. Those repairs (oxygen sensors and any others related to codes) need to be made.

The air conditioner's compressor sounds shot. They usually need to be replaced every 100,000 miles. Here are several links that may help:
