Having your cycles off by a couple of days is not unusual and isn't likely to effect your chances of becoming pregnant.

Getting an idea of when you might be close to ovulation will help you find the best time to become pregnant. The egg you release during ovulation will only survive for about 24 hours, but sperm from your partner may live a few days inside of you when you are close to ovulating.

A place to start is about 12-16 days before your next period would be due. You may want to add a few days before and after to this range in case you tend to ovulate earlier or later than the average. You may also look for changes in your cervical mucous. Many women will notice a discharge that becomes more clear and more fluid. This type of mucous allows the sperm to survive, while at other times they will die fairly quickly. There are other means, such as ovulation prediction kits, that some women find helpful too.

Some couples will try to have sex every other day or every third day throughout each cycle... with maybe a few more times during the time they think ovulation is most likely to occur.

It is important to remember as well, that many couples find it naturally takes them several months, even a year or so, to become pregnant. Disappointing when it doesn't happen quickly, but not necessarily a concern.
