    Please do not keep posting your question over and over. Once will suffice.

    I've gotten the impression in the past that these may mean something different in other locations, especially since I know of nothing called a "debit note" and "credit note." I know of a "debit memorandum" and "credit memorandum" which may or may not be the same thing. So don't take my answer as gospel.

    To me, the credit one comes from literally crediting a receivable account, as in, "giving someone credit" on their account. So that's when a seller (or even service provider) is reducing an account balance due to a return or something.

    The debit one being the opposite, meaning to debit a payable account, for the same reason, except that the buyer initiates it cause they're the one with the payable.
