    Hardshifting transmission
I have a 2007 Jeep Laredo with shifting problems. I lodged my first complaint at about 12K; It was hard shifting at low speeds downhill/uphill and a jerk/thud when shifting into reverse. Complaints were lodged at just about every service interval. I was told by the dealership that “this was normal for Jeeps and some people just don’t like the way Jeeps drive.” Hummm. At about 42K, it got so bad that the shifter mechanism was replaced. Get this... I was charged for the deductible on my extended warranty. Since I had complained so many times before 36K, I don’t think I should have had to pay at all, but they would not release the car without payment. It didn’t take long for the problem to reoccur and I logged another complaint at about 49K. No action was taken. At about 51K, the car would not shift and go over 30mph in rush hour traffic no less. We were lucky to be within 100 yards from a dealership were able to get a car rental before they closed at 6:00P. The shifter mechanism was replaced again. Unfortunately, the repair did not completely solve the problem. It’s about 57K miles now and the problem is at the point where it was shortly before it almost died the last time. I’m afraid that I am going to be alone on some country road late at night and I’m going to be stranded. What can I do to get some help to get this car fixed?

Did you drop and clean the pan, change the filter, and refill with ATF+4 every 30,000 miles? That's about all the average person can do--usually that's enough, however.

Thanks for the quick response. This vehicle has been dealer seviced for all scheduled maintenance. I checked the service record and the transmission was serviced at 34K to see if that would solve shifting problem.

Very unusual. Did they, in fact, drop and clean the pan, change the filter, and refill with ATF at 34,000 miles?

Yes. The fluid was replaced at 34K and did not cause the transmission to shift smoothly.

    Thanks anyway.
