    Underground wiring depth
    How "deep" should the underground electrical wire be for an ordinary lamp post 50 feet from the house? Is it necessary to go down below the freezing point like fence posts?

    In a residence 18" is all that is required.
    This can be reduced to 12" if the circuit is GFI protected before it goes underground.

If I am running underground wiring and using a GFI circuit how far down does the wire need to be buried and if its specific underground wire does it need to be in a conduit pipe through out the run or just at the point coming out of the ground to the outlet box. This is a 110 volt 20 amp circuit:
