Common reason for 2nd floor bathtub leak
The celing below a 2nd floor bathroom was leaking during the use of the shower. After waiting for one day, I tried to isolate the leak. To eliminate the handheld shower unit, I turned on the tub faucet without the shower and it still leaked after about 2 minutes. The drain is slow (my 17 year old has waist long hair), but it does drain-just slower. Would a glogged drain cause this kind of leak? Also, years ago when a plumber came to clean out the drain, it was discovered that the builders had connected the drain of the tub to the toilet (the snake came up into the toilet bowl) which the plumber said wasn't code. I don't know if that means anything, but on earlier posts the more details seemed to help with diagnosing the problem. Also, there is a steady small drip from the 3rd faucet that diverts the tub water to the shower head. We used to leave this faucet turned to "shower" all the time because she never takes baths only showers, but it would drip heavily when the hot and cold water faucets were turned off so then she started to turn the 3rd faucet off after every use but there are still little drips. Obviously I have neglected many things, and I don't know if any of these have to do with the leak, but a plumber bill is really going to be tough (I'm a full time student) and I have never done any repairs on my own-I need to learn how to do some of these things anyway. Where should I start? Does the 3rd faucet need to be replaced, or is it only a part that needes replacing? Any help would be so appreciated.
