    Standing shower leak
I have a standing shower in the second floor of the house. It is leaking to the ceiling of my garage. The weird thin is, it only leaks when I take a shower. It does not leak when I just run the shower. It seems it's something to do with the weight pressing on the shower floor. I checked the shower pan and there is no crack. I was told that it could be the strainer needs tightening the nut... could this be right? Doing this, I may have to make a hole in my garage ceiling, do you have any suggestions on how to cover the hole after?
    Thank you.

My bet's on the seal of the drain lip. (see image) The first thing I would do is open up the ceiling, loosen the large retaining nut and running a small rope of plumbers putty under the drain lip. Now tighten the nut up, remove the excess putty that squeezed out and test again. Bet the leak's gone now. To open the ceiling I would cut out a square and save it. After I repaired the leak I can them tape the square back in place smooth it out with spackle and repaint. Good luck, Tom

Standing Shower Drain Leaks [ 3 Answers ]

Hi: I read few articles about how to fix the shower drain leaks. I guess some experts suggested to use WingTite. I think the rubber gasket and the threaded top cover is what is causing the leak. The threaded holder seems a bit bigger than the hole of the shower drain itself and I don't know how...
